What it is
It is the authorisation that allows a foreigner to work for a specific employer in Poland. It is issued per employer, position and period.
Who applies
The employer, not the worker, files the application at the voivodeship office (urząd wojewódzki), online through praca.gov.pl. For some nationalities there is a simplified procedure (declaration of entrusting work), but it only applies to Armenia, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine; Georgia was removed from that list in December 2025. For most Latin American countries a work permit is normally required. Since June 2025 a new law has tightened the requirements for employers.
Permit ≠ visa
- Work permit: authorises you to work for that employer.
- National visa (type D): authorises you to enter Poland for that job. It is requested at the consulate, with the approved permit, and is valid for a maximum of 1 year.
- Residence card: to stay longer; it is processed in Poland.
Mistakes to avoid
- Paying someone who "guarantees" the permit or the visa. Nobody can guarantee them.
- Travelling without a contract or without the approved permit.
- Accepting a contract you do not understand. Ask for a copy and read it.
- Submitting false documents: it can lead to an entry ban.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for the permit myself?
No; the employer files it.
How much does it cost?
The permit fee is paid by the employer. The visa fee is paid at the consulate and set by each consulate. Official fees rose in December 2025.
Can I change employer?
The permit is normally tied to the employer; changing employer requires a new permit or an amendment to the existing one before you start the new job.
